Airlines impose new rules for smart luggage
If you are planning to buy smart luggage for your next trip, maybe you should reconsider your decision. Many smart suitcases could soon be limited or banned in the major airlines of the United States. For now, new security policies were announced. Smart suitcases have had an increase in popularity, and therefore, their sales, could suffer a blow thanks to the latest decision of several airlines to not allow or limit their use on commercial flights in the United States. “Smart bags or bags, also known as smart luggage, have become more popular in recent months, and are expected to be a popular gift this holiday season,” American Airlines told CNN. “However, smart suitcases contain lithium batteries, which pose a risk when placed in the cargo hold of an aircraft.”
Because of this, the airline has implemented new safety rules, asking passengers to remove and carry with them lithium-ion batteries, before delivering their smart bags to the cargo section. Although American was the first US airline to announce new policies, Delta and Alaska Airlines have announced similar rules that will take effect on January 15. In addition, spokespersons of United Continental and Southwest said that both airlines also plan to make an announcement soon about it.
Airlines fear that lithium batteries may overheat, explode, or cause a fire in the cargo hold, which would go unnoticed and would be difficult to control. Most prohibitions will allow people to leave their bags in the cargo section if the battery can be removed and transported by the passenger in the cabin. However, many of the suitcases that are already on the market have batteries that can not be removed. On the other hand, several manufacturers indicate that the intelligent suitcases are not in the list of articles prohibited by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and that their products comply with the current federal regulations of the Department of Transportation, the Federal Administration of Aviation and the Federal Communications Commission.
